Senior DOT Safety Specialist

Summary
The DOT Safety Specialist (Senior) champions transportation safety and compliance initiatives and serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) supporting CHS business units across Ag Retail, Distribution and Transportation in the CHS Northwest Region. This role partners with CHS Operations to strengthen safe execution through event investigations and learning, including Process in Control (PiC) insights, scenario-based training, and coaching that reinforces expected behaviors in the field. Key responsibilities include developing and/or delivering safety plans and programs, coaching leaders and teams, and performing audits and inspections to verify compliance and control effectiveness.
This role supports locations in Montana, Idaho, and Washington. The ideal candidate resides within the territory and can travel up to 25% to sites across the region.
Responsibilities
- Support emergency response efforts as necessary, maintaining a clear understanding of Incident Command protocols.
- Provide DOT regulatory support and compliance verification for transportation operations, including FMCSA/FMCSR and HazMat requirements, and translate requirements into practical field expectations.
- Support and reinforce a positive safety culture by applying Human and Organizational Performance (HOP), Just Culture principles, and Process in Control (PiC) concepts during coaching, audits, and event learning.
- Coordinate compliance with all applicable Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) related requirements (federal, state, local, and company).
- Develop and implement EH&S related plans, programs, policies, and procedures.
- Conduct effective EH&S related training for employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Conduct complex EH&S related audits, workplace inspections, job safety analysis, and maintain detailed recordkeeping.
- Coordinate prompt medical attention when needed and support incident response documentation and follow-up in partnership with site leadership.
- Lead or support transportation event investigations and learning reviews; identify contributing factors and corrective actions, and partner with Operations and Claims/Workers’ Compensation resources to support documentation and follow-through as needed.
- Facilitate event learning and scenario-based training using regional trends, investigations, and exposure points to strengthen consistent field decision-making.
- Communicate EH&S related requirements and expectations to other departments and personnel to ensure regulatory compliance and a safe work environment.
- Keep current on all applicable EH&S related rules and regulations.
- May assist more junior team members in work activities.
- Perform other responsibilities as needed or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (required)
- High School diploma or GED
- 4+ years of experience in Environmental, Health, and/or Safety
Additional Qualifications
- Ability to travel- up to 25%.
- Understand or experience in Emergency Response protocols and an understanding of Emergency Responder Incident Command
- In-depth knowledge or experience with the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Parts 371-399 and Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) regulations Parts 171-180
- Agriculture/commodities or transportation/or a logistics background (preferred)
- Ability to complete OSHA 30-hour construction training certification program.
- Bachelor's degree preferred in Occupational Health, Environmental Health and Safety, or related field.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to safely access and inspect commercial motor vehicles (CMVs), including climbing steps/ladders, working around vehicle traffic, and performing undercarriage/vehicle walkarounds as required.
- Ability to work outdoors in adverse and changeable weather conditions.
- Ability to stand/walk for extended periods and occasionally bend, kneel, or climb while conducting field observations and inspections.
CHS offers a competitive total rewards package. Compensation includes base wage and, depending upon position, may include other earnings such as bonus, incentives and commissions. Actual pay offered will vary based on multiple factors which may include, without limitation, experience, education, training, specialized skills and certifications, minimum wage/salary requirements under local law.
