CHS, Inc. has an exciting opportunity at our oil refinery facility in McPherson, Kansas. As a Process Engineer in the Engineering Development Program, you will work within a variety of Engineering groups that work in day to day in operational support monitoring Key Performance Indicators and assuring the safe, environmentally compliant operations of the various refinery process.  You must be a results-driven individual with a commitment to quality, accuracy, and the ability to organize and prioritize workloads to meet deadlines. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with a strong commitment to customer service and the ability to work in both a team environment and on self-directed tasks are necessary. 

The 24-month Engineering Development Program provides an opportunity for you to grow professionally. You will gain knowledge and experience through on-the-job training with three rotations through different refinery engineering departments.  These rotations will commence in the Process Engineering Department and will then move through two of the following department, Instruments & Controls Engineering, Unit Operations, Environmental Engineering, and Process Safety Management Departments.

Responsibilities

Process Engineering Function (up to 8-month rotation)

  • Learn the different Process Technologies employed in the refinement of oil.
  • Assist with developing, tracking, reporting, and reacting to appropriate metrics for measuring and improving the day-to-day process within the refinery.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and customers within the refinery to ensure the mission, objectives, and strategies are executed consistently, and support the refinery as intended.
  • Review, walk down and update Process Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) for to make sure they are accurate and up to date.
  • Perform regular Pre-startup Safety Reviews as part of the MOC process.
  • Track and monitor process heater burner operation and make recommendations to improve burner efficiency.
  • Track and monitor refinery steam systems and help identify areas of steam losses.

Process Safety Engineering Function (up to 8-month rotation)

  • Complete the OSHA Process Safety Management training.
  • Support the Process Safety Management department by preparing for Process Hazard Analysis.
  • Participate in PHAs.
  • Track and report Process Safety Performance Indicators
  • Assist in the monitoring and improvement of PSM related activities, incident reviews, and policies\

Process Controls Engineering Function (up to 8-month rotation)

  • Assist in monitoring health of Refinery’s Distributed Controls System (DCS).
  • Review system alarms and help write work orders for maintenance of system faults.
  • Review health of PID controllers and assist in identifying bad actors, and controllers requiring tunning.
  • Review System Event Logs to identify fleeting and chattering alarms and bad actors.
  • Assist in updating refinery Human Machine Interface (HMI) screens.
  • Assist in the review of instrumentation Loop Drawings.

Environmental Engineer Function (up to 8-month rotation)

  • Assist with emission testing and coordinate regulatory required sampling.
  • Assist with the preparation of air, water, and waste regulatory reports.
  • Assist with environmental compliance reports, provide regulatory interpretation support to plant personnel, and maintain recordkeeping in compliance with regulations.
  • Assist with technical review of release notifications to agencies and participate as directed in investigation of environmental incidents.
  • Participate in internal and external environmental audits and facilitate program improvements.

Minimum Qualifications (required)

  • Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering or related field

Additional Qualifications

  • Internship or up to one year of experience in refining, petrochemical, or related industry.
  • Proficient with MS Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to carry 25+ lbs
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs
  • Ability to sit, stand, talk, and hear
  • Ability to work in dust and adverse weather conditions and temperatures
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment, including respirators.

Actual pay offered will vary based on multiple factors which may include, without limitation, experience, education, training, specialized skills and certifications.
