Rail Transportation Intern

Summary

CHS has an exciting opportunity in our Global Grain & Processing group. We are looking for a Rail Transportation Intern to help support a variety of areas that will range in scale and complexity. You’ll have the opportunity to develop your skills by learning from and collaborating with a talented team of business and rail professionals. We are looking for an intern to start during spring semester 2022.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with CHS business units and rail vendors to assist/coordinate/troubleshoot repairs and invoices associated with CHS’s Private Railcar Fleet
  • Process waybilling, diversions & track/trace shipments through third-party rail carrier systems
  • Provide analysis of rail rate structures and spreads and/or rates for alternative modes of transportation to ensure and maximize market competitiveness
  • Source competitive freight rates and provide recommendations to internal customers so CHS utilizes the lowest cost of transportation possible while meeting the market needs
  • Assist with rate negotiation for confidential rail contracts and new business/marketing opportunities
  • Monitor and maintain rail rates and databases with current and accurate information
  • Effectively and timely communicate changes and resulting impacts to CHS
  • Rate daily shipments timely and accurately and communicate cost saving alternatives
  • Coordinate empty and loaded railcar logistics and manage repositioning of private car fleet
  • Effectively communicate with stakeholders efficient and economical options for execution via rail
  • Process rail billing, diversions and shipment rating through SAP's Transportation Module and third-party rail carrier systems
  • Suggest improvements to systems and processes regarding rail rates
  • Submit/file/follow up on rail claims with our vendors & carriers
  • Become a part of a successful, dynamic team using standard Lean processes to deliver quality and timely results to internal customers
  • Be encouraged and expected to innovate and be creative in your data analysis, problem solving and presentation of solutions
  • Maintain and promote a strong safety culture and follow all safety policies, procedures and regulations. Identify and communicate workplace hazards and correct or seek assistance in correcting unsafe actions or conditions.

Minimum Qualifications (required)

  • Currently enrolled in supply chain or similar degree program at an accredited institution, entering junior or senior year, or recent graduate
  • Experience with Office 365
  • Excellent communication skills, customer service, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, self-motivated with confirmed leadership abilities, presentation skills and be able to function in a team-oriented environment with resource and time constraints
  • A passion for customers, problem solving and attention to detail

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience with rail cars
  • Experience rail supply chain, logistics, rating, claims, invoicing or plant scheduling
  • Training/Experience in Lean methodologies
  • Experience with SAP
